Abstract

This study aims to analyze the entrepreneurial motivation of Mr. Yunus in operating an gaharu business in Probolinggo from the perspective of Islamic economics. This study employed a qualitative approach using field research. Data were collected through direct interviews with Mr. Yunus as the gaharu entrepreneur and subsequently analyzed descriptively to identify the factors shaping his entrepreneurial motivation, the challenges encountered in business operations, and the implementation of Sharia principles in business activities.

The findings reveal that Mr. Yunus’s entrepreneurial motivation is multidimensional, encompassing experience- and competence-based motivation, economic needs and self-reliance, social environment support, resilience in dealing with business risks, social benefit orientation, and spiritual motivation. Expertise in assessing gaharu quality, family and business-network support, and opportunities for increased income constitute important factors in sustaining the business. The primary challenge lies in the shift from cash-based transactions to credit transactions, in which payment arrangements are not always clearly defined, thereby creating risks to cash flow and working capital. In response to these challenges, Mr. Yunus adopts a prudent approach by carefully selecting business partners and strengthening trust in transactions.

From an Islamic economic perspective, the business reflects the principles of honesty, trustworthiness (amanah), transparency, responsibility, social concern, and an orientation toward divine blessing (barakah). Nevertheless, the governance of credit and debt transactions needs to be strengthened through proper documentation, clearly specified due dates, and mutual agreements between the parties to avoid gharar (excessive uncertainty). This study confirms that Islamic entrepreneurial motivation is not solely oriented toward profit maximization but also toward business sustainability, social welfare (maslahah), and the attainment of divine blessing.
